NW Premier Match Report: Orrell St. James' v Shevington Sharks
By Mike Horrocks
Shevington had no answer to a rampant Orrell side revelling in the wide open spaces on their Bankes Ave. pitch. Danny Pyke orchestrated the back line producing 8 tries through Marcus Grimshaw (3), Jack Mc Hugh (2), David Kennedy, Tom Whittle, and Jake Davies He also kicked 7 goals. Sam Baggaley, Kyle Topping and Richard Mac Leod were a constant threat as St James' grew in confidence and the introduction of 16 year olds Harry Mosley and Ryan Ellis in no way lessened the impact as they fitted seamlessly into the team.
The referee, James Collier contributed to the spectacle, totally in control throughout and standing no nonsense from players of either side; a refreshing change at this level of amateur rugby.
OSJ opened the scoring within 2 mins as a sweeping movement put him in at the corner and he added a second late in the first half. Pyke converted both. Shevington replied with a try through centre Johnny Bates to take the half time score to 12 - 4
However , in the second half the Orrell forwards dominated the much bigger visitors' pack with Jake Williams, Callum Wood, Sam Lewis, Tom Whittle, Bradley Gallagher and Joe Molyneux to the fore. The score steadily mounted as Orrell cut loose, keeping the ball alive with close support play and only a try by second row Matt Unsworth converted by winger Andrew Beaney gave the visitors some reprieve from the onslaught.
The final result of 46 - 10 was an emphatic reply to the 21 - 16 loss at Shevington a few weeks ago and puts Orrell in good stead for the play-off against Hindley at home next week.
