NW Premier Match Report Halton Farnworth 22 v Orrell St. James' 30
By Mike Horrocks
Stirring up the Hornets Nest
Orrell entered the Hornets' nest in a complacent manner, perhaps fooled by Halton's lowly league placing and were stung in no uncertain fashion as the Widnes side powered into a 16 - 0 lead after only 20 mins. 2nd row Chris Gill dived in on 2 mins leaving hooker Andy Owens a simple conversion. Tom O'Neill added two more, Owens converted one and Orrell looked in trouble. The visitors were finally stung into action as substitute Adam Ball went in at the corner, but loose forward Mike Gill restored Halton's lead and Owens converted to put OSJ in a precarious position.
However, on 30 mins full back Jack Mc Hugh steadied the ship with a long range individual effort and followed with another as he supported a fine break by Kieran O'Mara. Danny Pyke converted both to take the half-time score to 22 - 6
Within 5 mins of the resumption Mc Hugh completed his hat-trick backing up an excellent break by Jake Davies Brad Roby added the extras. Mc Hugh followed with his 4th four mins. later to put St.James' in front for the first time.
Orrell's normal service was resumed as fast hands put Capt David Kennedy in at the corner on 20 mins and the visitors' resolute defence kept Halton off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match to a final score of 22pts. to 30pts.
A well earned victory with a clear warning to this young Orrell team not to be fooled by league positions and the necessity to start as you mean to finish.
Good luck to Dave Kennedy, Sam Lewis and Jack Mc Hugh who have been selected to travel to Italy next week representing NWML English Lionhearts.
